Problems with Your Speedo Drive ??
|
|
Syptoms: Speedometer not working (at all), Odometer also not working.
My speedo packed up some time ago and my experiences with fixing it may help others with a similar problem, so here is the story....
There are three areas that could be at fault: The speedo, the cable or the drive gear.
I got the rear end of the car jacked up - firmyl supported on axle stands - this allows better access to the rather fiddly retaining plate and also puts most of the oil towards the front of the gearbox.
I unscrewed the retaing plate screw, I disconnected the cable from the gearbox drive end and attached a cordless drill to the cable end. Revving the drill up the speedo sprung into action, in fact I did about 30 mph! Not bad from a 7.2V battery. Be aware that the speedo will only produce a reading from one direction of cable rotation. This meant that both the speedo and cable were o.k. The blame was now pointing firmly at the drive gear. Fortunately I had a spare one lying around so I got that cleaned up and ready. Next the drive needed to be removed, I held a jam jar under the drive area and simply pulled the drive out. A small amount of oil came out which I caught in the jam jar. I popped the replacement drive in and put the cable back in and put the retaining plate back in - make sure it is the right way round - rather annoying if you find it isn't once that screw is finally back in!
A quick road test - and all was well - job done!
All the best with yours!
