60's Rallying
Where The Cortina and The SAAB 96 meet to do battle
In the 60's many battles were lost and won by these wonderful machines.
They were always close and always near the front of the race. These pictures are from
one of the few Ford videos that were made to cover the sucess of the Cortina during its hay days.
Note the Cortina's famous three wheel approach to cornering.
It was during these races that Eric Carlson
earned his nickname of "On the Top"
Carlson for his (true) stories of rolling the 96 onto its roof and being able to right it again.
In the aftermath of the races he demostrated this to the delight of the crowds.
Fords not to be outdone copied this and showed that the Cortina could do this as well.
The Ford video annouces this with great glee - what it fails to mention, unlike the SAAB books,
is that in doing so caused costly damage to flooring.
